H2Excellence Announces Winners of International Hydrogen RC Car Competition

The H2Excellence project officially announced the winners of the international hydrogen-powered radio-controlled (RC) car competition on March 21, 2025. The competition was organized and managed by the Higher Polytechnic School of Mondragon Unibertsitatea (MGEP), a valued partner of the H2Excellence project. The announcement was made during an online event that brought together students, educators, and project partners from across Europe.

The competition aimed at secondary school and vocational training students challenged participants to design a hydrogen-powered RC car. A total of 91 students, organized into 14 teams from 9 European schools took part in the competition. The winning teams were:

  • Istituto Superiore Ascanio Sobrero (Italy)
  • CESUR Intea Jarama (Madrid, Spain)

Each winning team received a hydrogen RC kit valued at €6 000 which includes an electrolyser for hydrogen production and all necessary components to assemble and operate their vehicle.

From September 2024 to January 2025, students developed detailed design reports and explanatory videos justifying the engineering behind eight key systems of their vehicles: hydrogen production, storage, fuel cell, electric traction, mechanical drive, car body, and energy efficiency. These justifications were supported by theoretical calculations, simulations, and experimental data.

The jury praised the winning entries for their high technical quality and innovative approaches.

Participating schools included:

  • CIPFP Canastell – Sant Vicent del Raspeig, Alicante (2 teams)
  • CESUR Sevilla Cartuja Formación Profesional – Seville (1 team)
  • nstitut Escola del Treball – Barcelona (1 team)
  • IES Enric Valor – Monòver, Alicante (1 team)
  • IES Federica Montseny – Valencia (1 large team)
  • S.I.S. Arturo Malignani – Udine, Italy (1 team)
  • Mondragon Goi Eskola Politeknikoa – Basque Country (4 teams)
  • VAMIA – Finland (1 team)

The winners are also invited to take part in the 2025 H2GP World Final which will be hosted in Chemintz (Germany) from August 20th to August 27th, 2025.
